VASE 2009
First Workshop on Visual Analytics in Software Engineering (VASE)November 16, 2009 (Auckland, New Zealand)
http://ecs.victoria.ac.nz/Events/VASEin conjunction with Automated Software Engineering (ASE) 2009
https://www.se.auckland.ac.nz/conferences/ase09/IMPORTANT DATES
Submission: September 14
Notification: September 30
Final version: End of October
Workshop: November 16SCOPE
The fields of information visualization and visual analytics have provided a rich source of techniques and tools for exploring complex information spaces. Automated software engineering creates or involves the handling of complex information spaces, and this workshop will look at the role that visualization and visual analytics has to play in supporting automated software engineering.As an example of this, researchers are currently developing novel methods, algorithms, and techniques to visualize multiple types and sets of artifacts. This goes beyond just looking at source code, but also visualizing and analyzing other documents, meta-data, or repository data for diverse, complex, and large-scale software applications.
There are a number of challenges facing both information visualization and visual analytics, and this workshop will provide the opportunity for researchers to come together and discuss the impact of these challenges on specifically supporting aspects of automated software engineering. Stemming from this, the workshop will provide the opportunity to propose and discuss a roadmap for future solutions to these challenges, and areas for collaboration.
VASE will be a workshop bringing together researchers in the fields of software visualization, information visualization and visual analytics. We invite novel contributions on any topics in advanced information visualization techniques and visual analytics relating to (and any other related area):
* Empirical software engineering
* Program understanding
* Software architecture and design
* Testing, verification, and validation
* Component-based systems
* Ontologies and methodologies
* Human-computer interaction
* Software metricshttp://ecs.victoria.ac.nz/Events/VASE
Posted by Craig Anslow on 08/24 at 07:27 PMThe results of the VAST 2009 Challenge have been posted. See the list of awards! http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/VASTchallenge09. A Visual Analytics Benchmark Repository giving access to the all the past VAST data sets and their uses (i.e. analyses done by others) will be available early september. The repository also allows you to enter new benchmarks and report onuses of those benchmarks (e.g. enter papers about work that used the dataset).
If you want to help us test it, please contact (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). ThanksPosted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 08/24 at 10:43 AMVisual analytics job skills: Two fun - and relevant - blog posts:

Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 06/01 at 11:24 AMIf you have a SUCCESS STORY of the use of visualization in your organization?
consider submitting a “report about the application of visualization systems to real world problems” to the InfoVis conference DISCOVERY EXHIBITION:
http://vis.computer.org/VisWeek2009/infovis/discovery_exhibition.html
I am sure that those success stories will be used by many people in the field of InfoVis.Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 06/01 at 11:22 AMThe papers of the CG&A May/June 2009 Special Issue on Visual Analytics Evaluation (that we edited) are now online in the IEEE digital Library. http://www.oecd.org/document/24/0,3343,en_2649_34637_2671576_1_1_1_1,00.htmlFun to give to your students for projects, the report could possibly be considered as the ground truth, but it would be nice to have someone extract from it examples of situations where finding a trend or anomalies is non trivial and could benefit from Visual Analytics tools.

Costello, L., Grinstein, G., Plaisant, C. and Scholtz, J., Advancing User-Centered Evaluation of Visual Analytic Environments through Contests - SEE: http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/semvast/IV-VAST08-paper-tr.pdfPosted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 04/20 at 01:11 PMThank you for the information. My area of interest is creating clinical patient profiles for health care team members to view clinical data that is not normally viewed together. This would be multiple pieces of information found in a patient’s clinical chart which could be over laid to represent new relationships. My other area of interest is medical imaging
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 04/11 at 03:43 PMPart of my work is in the health care domain (hereditary diseases, especially breast and ovarian cancer). Another is in the pharmaceutical arena.
Dr. Peter Henstock and I are giving a presentation at BioIT. My students just gave one at the NCBC Conference.
There are numerous commercial groups with tools in the area (VAI, Tableau, Spotfire, Inforsense, ...)
and public (PURVAC, VA Tech, UMd, ...) and lots in other countries as well.
If you specify a bit more the precise area of health care I may be able to provide names of individuals.
ggg.
