The interfaces compared in the experiments are the Elastic Windows interface and an independent overlapping windows interface, the twm window manager with the OpenWindows file-manager both running on a Sun Sparc 20, using SunOS operating system under X windows with a resolution of 1152x900 pixels on a 18 inch display.

snapshots of both of the interfaces
are shown for the high complexity task situation with 12 open
windows. These snapshots are only samples taken to give an idea of how
the interfaces look, as each user created varying layouts.
